THE UNDERPANTS
by Steve Martin, adapted from Carl Sternheim’s Die Hose
Steve Martin, the renowned comic actor and author provides a wild satire adapted from the classic German play Die Hose by Carl Sternheim about Louise and Theo Maske, a couple whose conservative German existence is shattered when Louise’s bloomers fall down in public at the royal parade. Martin proves himself a gifted playwright, taking this classic play and making it anew, with fresh themes on fame, feminism, and the nature of respectability. It’s the story of a woman, her overbearing husband, noisy neighbor, plentiful suitors, and the power of a piece of lingerie.
Frankfurt audiences can delight in this raucous adaption of Sternheim’s famous play, which was written as part of his play cycle, ‘The Heroic Life of the Bourgeois.’ Martin’s play takes aim at middle-class snobbery and conformity, adding his own unique spin on the piece, with a touch of postmodern feminism. Seven performances to choose from, at the Internationales Theater Frankfurt, Hanauer Landstrasse 5-7.
